The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, during its plenary on Tuesday, held a valedictory session in honour of Rt. Hon. Obong (Dr.) Cyril Matthew Ekiko, a former Minority Leader in the defunct Cross River State House of Assembly. Ekiko, who represented the then Ikono Oku Uyo State Constituency under the Great Nigeria People’s Party (GNPP), passed away at the age of 83.
Presiding over the session, the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Udeme J. Otong, led lawmakers in paying tribute to the late statesman. He described Ekiko as a “trailblazer, an outstanding pillar of the Ibibio nation, and a dependable elder of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Uyo Senatorial District.” The Speaker urged citizens to celebrate his legacy as a worthy ambassador of the legislative arm and a leader who contributed immensely to the state’s development.
Hon. Uwemedimo Dianabasi Udo, representing Uyo State Constituency, praised Ekiko’s dedication to public service, highlighting his advocacy for the establishment of a state university in Uyo. He also recognized him as a founding member of the South Eastern Union, USA (now AKISAN), and a man committed to the progress of his people.
Similarly, Rt. Hon. Chief Thomas Okon Akpan, Ekiko’s former colleague in the defunct Cross River State House of Assembly, described him as a compassionate leader, philanthropist, and a father figure who dedicated his life to the service of humanity. The Leader of Congress, Rt. Hon. Saturday Akpan, also extolled Ekiko’s generosity, stating that many lives were touched through his philanthropy.
The House concluded the session with prayers for the repose of the late lawmaker’s soul and extended condolences to his family. The plenary was adjourned and is set to reconvene on Thursday, February 20, 2025.
