The Akwa Ibom State Government has recorded approximately ₦22.47 million in revenue from its digital ticketing system, with 100,946 tickets sold as of 9:30 a.m. on Friday, October 23, 2026, as part of efforts to modernise revenue collection and strengthen urban security through technology.
The Commissioner for Science and Digital Economy, Dr. Frank Ekpenyong, disclosed the figures during the Ministerial Press Briefing at Government House, Uyo, where he outlined the state government’s ongoing digital transformation initiatives. He said the digital ticketing system was designed to improve transparency, accountability and efficiency in revenue administration.
Ekpenyong also announced the deployment of smart surveillance cameras at strategic locations across Uyo, explaining that the technology would enhance security monitoring and strengthen the state’s capacity to respond to security challenges. The system is expected to feature automatic number plate recognition, enabling relevant authorities to identify vehicle registration numbers and support security operations.
Beyond security, the commissioner said the surveillance infrastructure could provide useful data for regulatory compliance, urban planning and flood prevention and control. The initiative is expected to support evidence-based decision-making and improve the management of the state capital as urban activities expand.
He further disclosed plans to integrate public payments through a unified digital payment platform linked to the Treasury Single Account (TSA), alongside a proposed integrated payment card for seamless fare payments on public transportation, including buses and ferries. The planned measures are intended to simplify transactions for commuters while promoting a more coordinated and transparent system for government payments.
The initiatives reflect the state government’s drive to harness science, innovation and digital technology to improve public administration, strengthen security and enhance service delivery.
However, their long-term success will depend on effective implementation, reliable infrastructure, transparent revenue reporting and appropriate safeguards for citizens’ privacy as smart surveillance expands across Uyo.
