Kogi Gov Confirms Death of Newswatch Co-Founder Yakubu Mohammed
Yakubu Mohammed, co-founder of Nigeria’s iconic Newswatch Magazine and a respected figure in the nation’s media landscape, has died at the age of 75.
The death of the veteran journalist was confirmed on Tuesday by the Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, who expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Mohammed as a media pioneer whose contributions helped shape modern journalism in Nigeria.
Governor Ododo, in a condolence message, said the late Mohammed belonged to a generation of journalists who upheld professionalism, courage and integrity at a time when the practice of journalism demanded uncommon bravery. He noted that Mohammed’s role in establishing Newswatch Magazine left an indelible mark on investigative and public-interest journalism in the country.
According to the governor, Mohammed was not only a media entrepreneur but also a mentor to many journalists who passed through the rigorous Newswatch tradition, which became a reference point for excellence, accountability and fearless reporting in Nigeria.
He extended condolences to the Mohammed family, the Newswatch community, and the Nigerian media industry at large, praying for the repose of the departed journalist’s soul and strength for those he left behind.
Yakubu Mohammed rose to national prominence as one of the co-founders of Newswatch Magazine, a publication that dominated Nigeria’s news magazine sector in the 1980s and 1990s and played a critical role in shaping public discourse during military and civilian administrations.
His death marks the end of another chapter in Nigeria’s golden era of print journalism, leaving behind a legacy defined by commitment to truth, public accountability and the power of the press.
