UYO, The Akwa Ibom State Executive Council, presided over by Governor Umo Eno, has approved several key initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, transportation, and public safety across the state.
At the meeting held on Wednesday, March 26, and attended by top government officials, the Council ratified the implementation of a modern City Bus transportation system for Uyo metropolis. The project aims to provide a safe, reliable, and eco-friendly public transport system, boosting socioeconomic development and enhancing mobility for residents.
In a bid to restore the lost glory of the Ibom Hotels and Golf Resort, the Council approved a complete refurbishment of the facility. This will include overhauling furniture, electrical, and mechanical components to give guests a fresh and improved experience.
The Council also considered the extension of the Julius Berger contract for the maintenance of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, ensuring it remains in top condition as Nigeria’s premier sports facility and home to the Super Eagles.
A critical issue discussed was the status of the Eket International Market project. An Inter-ministerial Committee has been mandated to analyze the project and submit a report within a month to facilitate its revival for the benefit of the people.
The meeting also resolved to commence a pensioners’ verification exercise from April 1, 2025, to clean up pension records and ensure seamless payment to retirees.
On transportation and security concerns, the Executive Council directed strict enforcement of the ban on motorcycles (okada) within Uyo metropolis. It reaffirmed the restriction of tricycles (keke) on key roads, including Wellington Bassey Way, Abak Road, Aka Road, Ikot Ekpene Road, and Oron Road near Ibom Plaza. The Ministries of Transportation, Internal Security, and security agencies have been tasked with ensuring full compliance to curb crime and maintain order.
Additionally, the Council commended the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for bringing the Niger Delta Sports Festival to Uyo, encouraging residents to turn out en masse and support the event.
The meeting, which started at 12:00 p.m., concluded at 6:30 p.m.
