NFF UNDER FIRE AS FOOTBALL CRISIS DEEPENS
*Calls grow for accountability, grassroots revival and leadership overhaul

Nigeria’s football crisis has intensified amid mounting criticism of the administration of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), with allegations that politics and other considerations are increasingly taking precedence over performance in team selection and football administration.
Critics point to the weakening of grassroots structures, including school competitions, academicals and state leagues, as a major factor behind the declining pipeline of young talent. The latest struggles of Nigeria’s youth teams have further heightened concerns that the country’s traditional football development system is no longer producing players at the required standard.
The controversy has also raised questions about funding and accountability in Nigerian football. With FIFA Forward funding, Federal Government subventions and sponsorship revenues running into substantial sums, stakeholders are demanding greater transparency over how football resources are utilised, particularly as reports of unpaid coaches, stranded teams and inadequate preparations continue to surface. Critics have equally questioned the push for continuity in leadership despite the succession of disappointing results, arguing that accountability should accompany responsibility for the state of the game.
Proposals being canvassed for a football reset include a temporary restructuring of the NFF, an interim committee comprising former football professionals and technocrats, a comprehensive audit of football funds, and legislation guaranteeing a significant portion of NFF resources for grassroots development.
Advocates also want stronger state football associations and school competitions restored as part of a long-term talent-development pipeline. As Nigeria searches for a way out of its present difficulties, the central question remains whether the country can rebuild the structures that once made it a dominant force in African football and restore confidence in the green-and-white jersey.
