The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has entered a new chapter following a dramatic combination of leadership renewal and firm disciplinary action. In a major move aimed at repositioning the opposition party, delegates at the Elective National Convention elected a new National Working Committee (NWC), even as the party simultaneously announced the expulsion of high-profile members including Nyesom Wike, Ayodele Fayose, Samuel Anyanwu, and Dan Orbih.
The newly elected National Chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, takes the helm amid promises of rebuilding, unity, and revitalization. Comrade Ini Ememobong, the newly elected National Publicity Secretary, affirmed his commitment to his role as the PDP’s “Chief Image Maker and Public Defender,” describing his emergence as both a duty and a divine responsibility.
Ememobong acknowledged the party’s internal and external challenges but stressed that the current moment represents a “rebirth” for the PDP.
“This is our moment to build anew from the old, to rekindle the flame, and to present to Nigerians an opposition party they can genuinely trust,” he said.
Expressing confidence in the new leadership, he praised Turaki as an experienced and principled politician capable of steering the PDP toward greater unity and purpose. The new NEC, he asserted, will draw on the party’s past victories and missteps to rebuild a strong, credible opposition ready to engage the ruling party effectively.
The convention also reflected renewed enthusiasm among party faithful. Akpadiaha Ebitu, speaking at the Ibadan gathering, reaffirmed loyalty to the party, noting that the strong turnout demonstrated Nigerians’ growing desire for the PDP’s return to national leadership.
The disciplinary action taken against prominent figures signals what insiders describe as an effort to enforce internal order and restore the party’s ideological discipline. As the PDP embarks on what its leaders call a “rebirth,” it seeks the support of Nigerians to strengthen democracy and reposition the party as a genuine alternative for governance.
With new leadership in place and a bold step toward internal restructuring, the PDP is projecting confidence as it attempts to rebuild its political machinery ahead of future national contests.
