The people of Eket are once again raising concerns over the state of the Eket-China International Commodity Market, which remains abandoned despite Governor Pastor Dr. Umo Eno’s promise of urgent completion during his visit to the site.
Governor Umo Eno had, during his campaign, assured Akwa Ibom residents that his administration would prioritize the completion of key projects initiated by his predecessor, Udom Emmanuel, especially those left unfinished after eight years. His visit to the market raised fresh hopes among traders and residents, as he assured them that his government would work with the Eket Local Government Council, stakeholders, and the Yiwu company to resolve outstanding issues and ensure timely completion.
At the time of his visit, the Governor acknowledged that the project had reached 80% completion and thanked traders, particularly market women, for their patience. However, months later, the market remains in a state of abandonment, leaving many wondering when the promises will be fulfilled.
Traders and business owners, who had anticipated the revival of economic activities in the area, are growing increasingly frustrated by the delay. The market, initially envisioned as a hub for international trade, remains a shadow of its potential, with empty stalls and unutilized infrastructure.
The Governor’s entourage during the visit included his Deputy, Sen. Dr. Akon Eyakenyi, Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Enobong Uwah, former House of Assembly member Rt. Hon. David Lawrence, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Industry, Chief Press Secretary Comrade Ekerete Udoh, SSA to the Governor on Documentation, Comrade Essien Ekefre Ndueso, Eket Local Government officials, and other key stakeholders.
As residents of Eket continue to hope for progress, many are now asking: When will the Governor’s promise turn into action?
