Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Umanah, has categorically dismissed recent reports by Sahara Reporters alleging that the state government has committed N1.2 billion to the upcoming state anniversary celebration.
Speaking during a live interview on 60 Minutes Live on NTA Uyo, the Commissioner described the publication as sensational and misleading, urging the public not to conflate budgetary projections with actual expenditure.
“A budget is only an estimate, not an expenditure. It represents an intent as captured in the Appropriation Law. No kobo has been spent on the anniversary event, which is scheduled for September,” Umanah stated.
He explained that budget provisions go through several procedural stages before any money is spent, stressing that Governor Umo Eno’s administration adheres strictly to due process in all financial matters.
“Even when funds are appropriated, each line item must pass through authorization protocols, including expenditure codes, authority to incur expenses, and official releases, all of which are subject to cash flow and government priorities,” the Commissioner said.
Umanah emphasized that anniversary events typically involve broad preparations such as urban beautification, minor infrastructure touch-ups, and logistics, but reiterated that no actual expenditure has been made at this point.
He reassured citizens that Governor Umo Eno remains committed to transparent governance and prudent financial management.
“Governor Umo Eno is a very prudent leader. He has demonstrated a strong commitment to accountability in the management of public resources and will not fritter away state funds,” Umanah declared.
He further urged media organizations to verify sensitive financial information with relevant authorities before publication, to curb misinformation and promote responsible journalism.
