UYO, With the Niger Delta Sports Festival Trials fast approaching, the Akwa Ibom State Liaison Committee has intensified preparations to ensure a seamless screening and selection process for athletes representing the state.
In a crucial meeting held today, the committee, led by the Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, fine-tuned plans for the trials scheduled to begin on Tuesday, March 11, 2025. Bassey underscored the importance of merit-based selection and top-tier preparation, stating:
“We must ensure our athletes undergo the best preparations and are screened according to the rules. Only those who merit selection will represent Akwa Ibom.”
Beyond the trials, the committee is also focused on working closely with the Main Organizing Committee (MOC) to deliver a festival that will make Akwa Ibomites proud.
“Our responsibility extends beyond selection. The Governor has charged us to ensure a well-organized and memorable festival. This requires full collaboration with the MOC and the commitment of all stakeholders,” Bassey added.
The committee members in attendance included Lady Rose Nsa Bassey (Permanent Secretary/Vice Chairman), Mrs. Inyang Uwah (Secretary/Welfare), Kufre Etukudo (Facilities), George I. Essien (Media/Scouting), Coach Daniel Umoette (Technical), Catherine Ekuta (Technical), James James (Accreditation), and Janet Bassey (Medical).
As part of its activities, the committee inspected the Uyo Township Stadium, assessing key facilities such as the swimming pool, dressing rooms, lighting, and security fencing. On Monday, they will host the MOC for further facility tours and strategic discussions.
The Niger Delta Sports Festival Trials will run from March 11 to 23, 2025, leading up to the main event from April 1 to 8. Over 3,000 athletes will compete in 17 sports across various centers in the state, making it one of the most significant sporting events in the region.
With meticulous planning and strong collaboration, Akwa Ibom is set to deliver an outstanding and impactful sports festival.
