Akwa United FC advanced to the semi-finals of the 2025 Akwa Ibom State Federation Cup with a determined 3-1 victory over Pillars Investors Academy on Thursday at the Uyo Township Stadium.
The game got off to a flying start, with Akwa United taking the lead in just the third minute as Chijioke Alaekwe capitalized on a defensive lapse to slot home. However, Pillars Investors Academy responded with grit and intensity, pushing forward in search of an equalizer. Their persistence paid off in the 15th minute when defender Victory E. outjumped his markers to head past Akwa United’s goalkeeper Jean Efala, leveling the score at 1-1.
The remainder of the first half saw both teams create chances, but neither could find the breakthrough, keeping the contest finely balanced at halftime.
In the second half, Akwa United head coach Kennedy Boboye made key tactical adjustments, introducing fresh legs into the match. The changes proved decisive, as substitute Emmanuel Ini restored Akwa United’s lead with a composed finish. The victory was later sealed in an unfortunate turn for Pillars Investors Academy, as their own goal—credited to Victory E., who had earlier scored at the right end—extended Akwa United’s advantage to 3-1.
At the final whistle, Akwa United celebrated their progression to the semi-finals, while Pillars Investors Academy exited with their heads held high, having put up a valiant fight against the tournament’s most successful club.
The competition continues on Monday, February 10, with 7th Wonders Football Academy set to face Eagle Eye Football Academy at 3 p.m. at the Uyo Township Stadium.
Meanwhile, Akwa United will shift their focus to a crucial semi-final encounter against Nigeria National League side Godswill Akpabio United FC. A win would not only earn them a place in the final on February 23 but also guarantee one of the two available slots for the national Federation Cup.
