Uyo, The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, has expressed appreciation to Governor Umo Eno for fulfilling his promise to complete the Union’s Auditorium project. This was one of the resolutions reached at the NUJ Congress held on Thursday, January 16, 2025, at the Press Centre, Information Drive, Uyo.
The Congress announced that the Inter-Ministerial Direct Labour Committee contractor would commence work on the Auditorium project next week, marking a significant step toward its completion.
In attendance at the Congress was the newly appointed Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, who pledged to collaborate with journalists to ensure improved security in the state. Congress assured the Commissioner of the media community’s continued support.
The Union also commended Governor Eno and Senator Aniekan Bassey, representing Uyo Senatorial District in the National Assembly, for their consistent support to the NUJ. Additionally, the immediate past State Executive Council members were lauded for fostering a harmonious working relationship with the Governor.
Special recognition was given to the former Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ini Ememobong, for his outstanding service to the Ministry and his recent academic achievement—a Master’s degree in Leadership and Development from King’s College, London.
On public safety, the Congress called on the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) to investigate excessive gas leaks at EDSENS Energy Ultramodern Digital Gas Plant, Abak. The January 1, 2025, incident posed a significant threat to residents, prompting the Congress to demand the relocation of the gas plant to a non-residential area for safety and compliance with operational guidelines.
The Union applauded the efforts of security agencies and the state government in combating insecurity but urged the government to provide additional operational vehicles to the police for enhanced response to security challenges.
