UYO, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to officially inaugurate the much-anticipated Niger Delta Sports Festival (NDSF) on Wednesday, April 2, at the Uyo Township Stadium. The event, sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), will host over 3,000 athletes and 500 officials competing across 17 sporting disciplines, with festivities running until April 8.
In the lead-up to the grand opening, the festival torch has journeyed across the nine Niger Delta states, commencing from Bayelsa State. It will culminate in the ceremonial lighting of the cauldron in Uyo, symbolizing unity and sportsmanship among participating athletes.
The Uyo Township Stadium, previously a modest sporting venue, has undergone a significant transformation, showcasing an array of vibrant colors, sports symbols, and artistic patterns. Residents have marveled at the renovations, attributing the makeover to the efforts of the NDDC.
With just a day left before the grand opening, final touches are being made to the decorative structures, live television broadcast setups, and the performance stage. Security presence has noticeably increased, yet locals continue to engage with the evolving spectacle, with hawkers and traders seizing the opportunity to sell sports merchandise and memorabilia.
“This feels like a carnival, and we are lucky to host such a big event in our state,” expressed Etuk James, a young footballer, as he posed for a picture against a mural featuring Nigerian sports icons like Emmanuel Amuneke, Victor Ikpeba, Nwankwo Kanu, and Seun Ogunkoya.
The opening ceremony promises to be a cultural and entertainment spectacle, featuring 40 musical and comedic acts from the Niger Delta region, along with traditional dance performances representing the NDDC states.
Edi Lawani, Chairman of the Culture and Entertainment Sub-committee, assured that the festival’s kickoff will be a grand affair. “We are bringing high-energy sound systems with an exotic display of show lighting and large-format screen projections,” he stated.
As excitement builds, Uyo braces itself for a festival that not only celebrates sports but also showcases the rich cultural heritage of the Niger Delta region.
