The battle for sporting supremacy in Akwa Ibom State will begin on September 22 as athletes from the 31 Local Government Areas converge for the 2026 Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival, scheduled to run until September 27. All eyes will be on defending champions Itu LGA, who claimed the 2025 title with 106 medals, as they face a determined Uyo LGA, which finished runners-up last year. Nsit Atai, which placed third in 2025, and the other participating LGAs will also be seeking to upset the established order and stake their claim to the championship.
While Itu will be under pressure to prove that last year’s triumph was no fluke, Uyo will be aiming to turn its second-place finish into outright victory.
The competition, however, promises to extend beyond the two leading contenders, with all 31 LGAs expected to arrive with athletes ready to compete across athletics, football, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, wrestling and other sporting events. With the championship determined by overall performance, medal haul, depth of talent and consistency across disciplines could prove decisive when the final standings are announced.
Beyond the race for medals and the championship trophy, the 2026 festival represents another major opportunity for talent discovery and youth development in Akwa Ibom. Emerging athletes will have a platform to attract attention and potentially progress to state, national and international competitions. Itu wants to retain its crown, Uyo wants to take it, while other LGAs will be dreaming of a historic breakthrough.
From September 22 to 27, the field will provide the answer to the big question: who will emerge from the 2026 Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival champions?
