ABUJA, Former House of Representatives member and Special Adviser on Media/Publicity to the President of the Senate, Rt. Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, has commended the leadership of Senate President, Godswill Obot Akpabio, describing the last three years of the 10th Senate as a period of transformative and impactful legislative leadership.
In a statement marking the third anniversary of the 10th Senate, Eyiboh said the Senate under Akpabio has demonstrated stability, legislative productivity, and commitment to reforms aimed at addressing Nigeria’s economic and governance challenges.
According to him, the Senate has maintained an ambitious legislative agenda, introducing hundreds of bills and passing several landmark laws focused on economic growth, fiscal reforms, education, energy, and institutional development.
He noted that one of the major achievements of the Senate was the passage of four key tax reform bills designed to modernize Nigeria’s tax administration, expand the tax base, improve compliance, and boost government revenue generation.
Eyiboh also highlighted the enactment of the Student Loan Act and amendments to the Electricity Act, describing them as significant measures aimed at improving access to education and strengthening power generation and distribution across the country.
He further praised the Senate for promoting bipartisan cooperation, maintaining institutional stability, and ensuring timely passage of national budgets over the past three fiscal years, a development he said has enhanced economic planning and project implementation.
On oversight functions, Eyiboh said the Senate actively engaged stakeholders on critical national issues, including fuel supply challenges, while continuing to discharge its constitutional responsibilities through investigative hearings and committee reviews.
He also commended the Senate’s role in parliamentary diplomacy, noting Nigeria’s increased visibility in international legislative engagements, including its election into the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
The former lawmaker cited the Senate’s handling of the 2023 Niger Republic crisis as evidence of legislative independence, recalling that the upper chamber advocated diplomatic engagement over military intervention following the coup in the neighbouring country.
While acknowledging concerns raised by some critics regarding oversight and confirmation processes, Eyiboh maintained that the Senate’s overall performance has reflected a commitment to national development, democratic governance, and institutional stability.
He expressed confidence that the reforms championed by the Senate would leave a lasting impact on Nigeria’s governance landscape if effectively implemented, adding that history may ultimately remember the 10th Senate as a legislature that contributed significantly to stabilising governance and strengthening democratic institutions during a critical period in the nation’s development
