The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, on Thursday joined eminent personalities from across the country to bid farewell to renowned musical icon, Sir Godwin Jackson Akpan, popularly known as Sir Wilker Jackson.
The funeral service, held at Mbak Etoi in Uyo Local Government Area, drew a large gathering of political leaders, cultural stakeholders, entertainment figures and admirers who came to celebrate the life and contributions of the late highlife legend.
Governor Eno, who was represented by the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Anieti Udofia, described the late Sir Wilker Jackson as a cultural ambassador whose music projected the rich heritage of Akwa Ibom beyond its borders.
He noted that the deceased left behind not just songs, but a legacy of discipline, creativity and community pride.
The governor urged the bereaved family to find solace in the enduring impact of their patriarch’s work, encouraging them to uphold the values and reputation he built during his lifetime.
He emphasized that Sir Wilker Jackson’s contributions to the development of indigenous music remain significant, adding that the state government would continue to support initiatives that preserve and promote local cultural expressions.
Family members, friends and associates paid glowing tributes, recalling the late musician’s humility, dedication to his craft and role in mentoring younger artistes. Several speakers at the service described him as a bridge between generations in the evolution of Akwa Ibom’s contemporary highlife sound.
Sir Wilker Jackson was widely celebrated for his distinctive style and commitment to promoting Ibibio language and culture through music. His passing, many said, marks the end of an era but also reinforces the timeless value of cultural preservation.
The ceremony featured musical renditions, prayers and heartfelt reflections, as the community gave a final salute to one of its most treasured cultural figures.
