The Akwa Ibom sports and political community is mourning the passing of Comrade Aniefiok Ekarika, a revered civil servant, accomplished footballer, and astute politician. His sudden demise on November 28, 2024, at the age of 69 has left a void that will be difficult to fill.
Born on October 7, 1955, in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area, Aniefiok Ekarika was the son of Late Patron (DSP) Udoaka Asuquo Ekarika (Rtd) and Late Madam Affiong Essiet Udoaka.
His academic journey began at Methodist Primary School, Urua Ekpa, and continued at Nto Ndang Secondary School. He later pursued higher education at The Polytechnic, Calabar, where he obtained an NCE in Business Education (Accounting/Economics) in 1987.
His quest for knowledge led him to the University of Uyo, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 1998 and a Master’s degree in 2002.
Comrade Ekarika’s professional career began in 1977 when he joined the Cross River State Sports Council. He later became the Accountant for Ibom Stars Football Club, which later transformed into Akwa United Football Club. He retired in 2012 as an Assistant Director (Accounts) but remained actively involved in the sports sector.
A true sports enthusiast, Comrade Ekarika played for several football clubs, including Rovers FC Calabar and Customs FC. He also coached teams such as Ikot Ekpene Football Team. As a founding member of the All Stars Football Club of Uyo and the Akwa Ibom State Football Coaches Association Chairman, he left an indelible mark on sports development in the state.
Beyond sports, he was a key figure where he served in various capacities, including Bar Secretary and Maintenance Secretary. His contributions to football development earned him numerous awards.
Comrade Ekarika was a devoted husband to Mrs. Mfon Aniefiok Ekarika and a loving father. His marriage was blessed at Insight Bible Church, Uyo, where he served as an Elder and a leader of the Men’s Fellowship.
On November 18, 2024, he woke up feeling slightly unwell but still participated in his usual training routine. However, his health deteriorated, and he was rushed to a private hospital before being transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital. Despite medical efforts, he passed away on November 28, 2024, at 6:23 a.m.
His passing is a great loss to his family, friends, and the sports community. As loved ones gather to bid him farewell, they take solace in his impactful life and the legacy he leaves behind.
