An elderly resident of Ikot Akpa Inyang in Ward 4, Oruk Anam Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Mrs. Adiaha Akpan Ukong, is calling for urgent intervention from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs over her deteriorating living condition.
Mrs. Ukong currently resides in a severely dilapidated building that poses significant risks to her safety and well-being. The structure, visibly weakened by age and exposure to harsh weather conditions, is said to be on the verge of total collapse, raising concerns among neighbours and community members.
Residents of the community describe her condition as distressing, noting that the fragile state of the building leaves her vulnerable, particularly during heavy rainfall and strong winds.
They are appealing to the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to urgently assess her situation and provide assistance.
Stakeholders in the area believe Mrs. Ukong qualifies for support under the state’s social intervention housing scheme, popularly known as the ARISE Compassionate Home initiative, which is designed to provide decent shelter for indigent and vulnerable citizens.
Community leaders have urged relevant authorities not to delay action, stressing that access to safe and secure housing is a basic human need that should not be compromised.
As of the time of filing this report, officials of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs are yet to respond to the appeal.
