The Edo State Government has approved a two-week closed camping programme for athletes and coaches as part of preparations for the second edition of the Niger Delta Games.
The decision, aimed at sharpening athletes’ competitiveness and improving overall performance, was announced by the state’s sports authorities ahead of the regional sporting event, which brings together athletes from across the Niger Delta states.
According to the government, the closed camping arrangement will allow athletes to train intensively under controlled conditions, free from distractions, while also enabling coaches to assess fitness levels, fine-tune strategies and build team cohesion.
Officials explained that the move underscores Edo State’s commitment to sports development and its determination to make a strong showing at the Games. The programme is expected to cover selected disciplines in which the state has comparative strength.
The Niger Delta Games, now in its second edition, is designed to promote unity, youth engagement and talent discovery across the oil-producing states of the region. It also serves as a platform for identifying athletes who can be groomed for national and international competitions.
The Edo State Government assured that adequate welfare, accommodation, feeding and medical support would be provided for all athletes and officials during the camping period to ensure optimal performance.
Sports stakeholders have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a proactive step that could give Edo State a competitive edge at the Games.
