In a renewed commitment to elevate sports development and athlete motivation, the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Sports has announced plans to introduce improved monthly welfare packages for performing athletes.
The State Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, disclosed this at a post-National Sports Festival retreat held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo. The retreat brought together staff, coaches, and secretaries of all sports associations in the state.
According to the Commissioner, the decision follows the state’s performance at the 2025 National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, where Akwa Ibom athletes clinched a total of 48 medals.
While acknowledging the effort, Elder Bassey maintained that the state has the capacity to exceed such achievements with better support systems.
“The just concluded National Sports Festival has exposed serious concerns regarding the welfare of our athletes and the structural challenges faced by various associations,” Bassey said. “We can no longer afford to overlook these issues. Athletes who consistently deliver medals for the state deserve a comprehensive welfare package that supports their health, training, and overall well-being.”
He emphasized the importance of internal competitions and strategic preparations ahead of future events, while also promising modern training facilities and updated equipment for all sporting associations.
“We are determined to do better, and that starts with investment, not only in infrastructure, but in the athletes themselves,” the Commissioner added.
The two-day strategic retreat was also attended by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Rosemary Ubia, alongside directors, coaches, and administrative heads of various sports bodies.
