Abuja, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, to uphold transparency, credibility, and non-violence in the nation’s electoral process.
The President gave the directive during the swearing-in ceremony of the INEC Chairman, which took place exactly one week ago at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Tinubu emphasized that the protection of electoral integrity is central to sustaining public trust and strengthening Nigeria’s democracy, particularly as preparations intensify for the 2025 Anambra State governorship election.
“To maintain public trust in elections, electoral integrity must be protected. All aspects of the process from registration to campaigning, media access, voting, and counting should be transparent, non-violent, and credible,” the President said.
The appointment of Professor Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and respected legal scholar, marks a new chapter for the electoral body. He succeeds former INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure ended earlier this year.
Political observers say Tinubu’s remarks underscore his administration’s commitment to credible elections and the need for the new INEC leadership to rebuild confidence in the system amid rising public scrutiny.
