Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Babangida Nguroje, has declared his support for the creation of Sardauna State, while also advocating for a constitutional role for traditional rulers and guaranteed representation for women in the Nigerian legislature.
Nguroje made his position known during the ongoing constitutional review process, stressing the need for lawmakers to reflect the true aspirations of Nigerians in the amended document.
“As we head into the final day of public engagement, the House of Representatives and indeed the National Assembly should prioritize the inputs of the public and deliver a constitution that can be truly said to have emanated from demands of the people,” he stated.
He emphasized that the proposed Sardauna State, located in the extreme southeast of present-day Taraba State on the Mambilla Plateau, holds significant economic potential, particularly with its scenic landscape and vast agricultural resources.
Nguroje further called on the National Assembly to recognize the importance of traditional institutions in governance, adding that they play critical roles in fostering peace and stability at the grassroots.
He also urged the legislature to create a permanent constitutional slot for women in order to ensure inclusivity, equity, and broader participation in national development.
