INEC Confirms 17 Parties For 2026 FCT Council Elections, Publishes Final Candidates List

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has released the final list of candidates cleared to contest the February 21, 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council Elections.

According to a statement signed by INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, a total of 17 political parties have been confirmed by the Commission to participate in the polls.

Olumekun explained that the publication of the final list followed the expiration of the period provided for the withdrawal and substitution of candidates, in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

He noted that the release of the list signals the Commission’s readiness to proceed with the next stages of the election timetable, adding that all political parties, candidates, and stakeholders are expected to comply with the rules and guidelines governing the electoral process.

The FCT Area Council elections, scheduled for February 21, 2026, will determine chairmen and councillors across the six area councils of the nation’s capital.
