As Akwa Ibom State braces for the 2025 Sports Festival, a wave of anticipation is sweeping across communities with the launch of one of its most enduring traditions, the Torch of Unity. Officially ignited on Friday, August 29, 2025, by Governor Umo Eno at Government House, Uyo, the torch is now set to tour the length and breadth of the state, carrying with it a message far deeper than ceremonial light.
Beginning Monday, September 1, the torch will blaze through all 31 local government areas in just two days, a deliberate feat that underscores the symbolic urgency of unity, peace, and discipline — the very ethos of the festival.
For Elder Paul Bassey, Commissioner for Sports and Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for the Festival, the torch is not a mere prelude to games. “It is a binding flame,” he explained, “a reminder that Akwa Ibom, in all its diversity, remains one people with a shared spirit of excellence and resilience.”
Two Routes, One Purpose: To achieve the ambitious statewide coverage, the Ministry of Sports has deployed two official teams, each carrying a torch on separate routes. In a carefully mapped itinerary, the flame will make symbolic stops at local government secretariats where chairmen, sports supervisors, and residents will receive it with brief but spirited ceremonies.
On Day One, the torch will move simultaneously across areas such as Ini, Ikono, Ikot Ekpene, Essien Udim, Oruk Anam, Ukanafun, Ika, Etim Ekpo, and Abak in one route; while on the other route, it will journey through Nsit Atai, Okobo, Mbo, Udung Uko, Oron, Urueoffong Oruko, and Ibesikpo Asutan.
By Day Two, the relay will continue through Nsit Ibom, Etinan, Nsit Ubium, Eket, Esit Eket, Ibeno, Onna, Itu, Ibiono Ibom, Mkpat Enin, Ikot Abasi, Eastern Obolo, Uruan, before its grand finale in Uyo, the state capital.
A Festival Beyond Sports: The Sports Festival, revived under the present administration, is steadily evolving into more than just a showcase of physical prowess. It is a cultural convergence, a testing ground for grassroots talent, and a platform to foster unity among Akwa Ibom’s diverse communities.
The torch, therefore, becomes both a physical and spiritual beacon, a reminder of the state’s collective aspiration to raise champions while building stronger bonds of brotherhood. As it flickers across the towns and villages, it carries an invitation: for residents to come together, celebrate, and uphold the festival’s core values, unity, discipline, and sportsmanship.
Igniting the Spirit of a People: Already, expectations are high that the 2025 edition will uncover fresh talent that may one day fly the state’s flag at national and international competitions. But beyond medals and trophies, the greatest triumph may well be the rekindling of a communal spirit, the kind that lights up when thousands of voices cheer as one.
As the Torch of Unity cuts across Akwa Ibom’s landscape, its message is unmistakable: sport is not just about winning. It is about belonging. It is about reminding a people that in their shared sweat and celebration lies their greatest strength.
