Akwa Ibom-born Olympian and International Technical Official, Mr. Lawrence Iquaibom, has been elected Vice President of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) after a decisive contest at the Gymnasium, Package-B of the National Stadium, Abuja.
In the election held on Saturday, August 16, Iquaibom secured eight votes to defeat Innocent Nwankwo of Anambra State, who garnered four votes. Two other contenders, Mr. Luke Ibe and Mr. Steve Olarinoye, withdrew from the race shortly before voting commenced.
Reacting to his victory, the retired Director in the Akwa Ibom State Civil Service dedicated the win to Governor Umo Eno, whom he credited with creating “the enabling environment for sports to thrive.”
“It was tough, but God saw me through. I dedicate today’s victory to our beloved Governor, Pastor Dr. Umo Eno, who has provided the enabling environment for sports to thrive in our state,” Iquaibom said.
“I thank the Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, my colleagues, delegates, and the people of Akwa Ibom for their support. This is a call to service, and I promise to contribute my utmost as we work together to advance weightlifting in Nigeria and beyond.”
A gold medalist at the 1983 Commonwealth Championship, former Chairman of the Nigeria Olympic Committee Technical Commission, and a respected figure in African and international weightlifting, Iquaibom brings decades of experience to the federation’s leadership.
He joins Dr. Ibrahim Abdul Aladi, who was re-elected unopposed as NWF President, alongside other elected board members including Zana Umara, Senator Hussaini Babangida Uba, Ibeh Luke Onwumere, Lasisi Kazeem Aderemi, Onubaye Sefiya (Technical Representative), Osijo Taiwo (Athlete Representative), Sir Chimdi Ejiogu Obioma (International Representative), Innocent Nwankwo (Military/Paramilitary Representative), Dr. Steve Olarinoye (NAPHER-SD), and Alhaja Omolola Tijani (NAWIS).
All newly elected officials will be inaugurated for a four-year term at a ceremony to be conducted by the National Sports Commission (NSC) in the coming days.
