Senate President Godswill Akpabio has categorically denied widespread claims on social media suggesting that the National Assembly has approved the creation of new states, describing such reports as false and misleading.
Speaking during Tuesday’s plenary, Akpabio responded to a point of order raised by Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central), clarifying that although the Constitution Review Committee has received no fewer than 42 proposals for the creation of new states, none has advanced through the necessary constitutional procedures.
“I have seen over 42 proposals, but not one has gone through full deliberation. The process of creating a state is very rigorous and has not been completed in any instance,” Akpabio said.
The Senate President urged communities and interest groups to desist from organising meetings or mobilising support for new states based on unsubstantiated claims. He emphasized that no state has been created by the National Assembly and advised Nigerians to depend solely on official legislative communications for accurate information.
Akpabio reiterated the importance of constitutional due process and cautioned against premature celebration or agitation that could mislead citizens and destabilise regions.
The issue has sparked interest in various parts of the country, including Akwa Ibom State, where the proposed creation of Obolo State continues to stir ethnic and political debates over its boundaries and implications for minority groups.
In a related development, the Senate announced a special session scheduled for Wednesday to honour former President Muhammadu Buhari, reflecting on his leadership and contributions to Nigeria’s development.
