UYO, In a solemn yet impactful gesture, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command on Tuesday disbursed over N37 million to families of police officers who lost their lives in active service.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, who presented the cheques to 33 beneficiaries, said the payment, totaling N37,280,296.36, was made on behalf of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olukayode Egbetokun, PhD, NPM under the IGP Family Welfare and Group Life Assurance Schemes.
Describing the initiative as a bold commitment to the welfare of fallen heroes’ families, CP Azare emphasized that the gesture is not just financial but symbolic affirming that the sacrifices made by the deceased officers would never be forgotten.
“Even though your loved ones are no longer with us, their gallantry and dedication remain etched in the history of our nation,” the CP said during the presentation ceremony.
He praised the Inspector General for his continued concern for the well-being of police officers and reiterated the Force’s dedication to sustaining welfare schemes for both serving and deceased personnel.
The CP further encouraged the beneficiaries mostly next-of-kin of the late officers, to use the funds wisely to honor the memory of their loved ones and to ensure family stability in their absence.
The event, held at the State Police Headquarters, Uyo, was witnessed by senior officers, family representatives, and members of the press.
