Uyo, Watbridge Hotels, a leading hospitality brand in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Nigerian international goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, describing his passing as a monumental loss to Nigerian football.
In a statement issued by the hotel’s Head of Marketing and Operations, Mr. Elkinson Ataha, the management paid glowing tribute to the late football legend, popularly known as ‘Dodo Mayana’. Ataha noted that Rufai was not only a friend of the hotel but also a frequent guest who appreciated the serenity and expansive comfort of Watbridge whenever he visited Uyo.
“Peter Rufai was a humble, amiable, and thoroughly professional individual whose presence at Watbridge always left a positive mark. We mourn his demise and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, the football community, and indeed all Nigerians,” the statement read.
Rufai, who earned 63 caps for the Super Eagles, was a vital figure in Nigeria’s golden generation of the 1990s. He started his club career with Stationery Stores of Lagos before featuring for top European clubs including Beveren and FC Lokeren in Belgium, as well as Gil Vicente and Deportivo La Coruña in Spain.
Watbridge Hotels described Rufai’s life as one that inspired a generation of athletes, and affirmed that his legacy in Nigerian football will never be forgotten.
“As we grieve, we also celebrate a life of purpose, passion, and national pride. Nigeria has indeed lost a legend,” Ataha concluded.
