UYO , The Akwa Ibom State Executive Council (EXCO), under the leadership of Governor Umo Eno, has taken major policy decisions aimed at deepening industrialization, improving youth welfare, and enhancing infrastructure development during its meeting held on Monday, July 7, 2025, at the Government House, Uyo.
Chaired by Governor Umo Eno, with Deputy Governor Senator Akon Eyakenyi, the Secretary to the State Government, the Head of Civil Service, and Commissioners in attendance, the council reviewed strategic memos and adopted several forward-looking resolutions critical to the State’s ARISE Agenda.
Key Resolutions and Approvals:
1. Strategic Road Infrastructure at Itam Industrial Park
The Council ratified approval for the construction of a 2.15-kilometre dual carriage rigid pavement and the rehabilitation of a 0.8-kilometre dual carriage flexible pavement within the Itam Industrial Park in Itu Local Government Area. This move is designed to drive industrial development and catalyse economic growth in the region.
2. Investment Engagement and Management Reform:
EXCO reviewed the State’s investment portfolio and constituted a Committee to engage key investment partners, notably the management of Rafia City Hotels (Four Points by Sheraton). The Committee is expected to submit its recommendations within 30 days.
Additionally, the Committee was tasked with designing a comprehensive management framework for the Ibom Hotels and Apartments brand nationwide. This includes the creation of a functional and diverse Board to oversee the hotel chain’s operations.
3. NYSC Allowance Extended Nationwide for Akwa Ibom Indigenes:
In a bold gesture to support Akwa Ibom youths serving in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the Council extended the ₦20,000 monthly allowance previously reserved for corps members serving within the State to include all indigenes serving across Nigeria. The allowance, part of the ARISE Youth Support Initiative, aims to ease financial burdens and encourage patriotism.
4. Development Enforcement at Ewet Housing Estate:
To address growing concerns about security and urban decay, EXCO directed that allottees of undeveloped or abandoned plots in the Ewet Housing Estate must commence construction within 90 days or face revocation. The Ministry of Housing and Akwa Ibom State Property and Investment Company (APICO) will enforce compliance.
5. Sports Festival Preparations Accelerated:
The Executive Council received updates on the upcoming Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival and instructed the Planning Committee to expedite preparations. The festival is seen as a vital platform for identifying and nurturing sports talents within the State.
6. Ibom International Hospital Project Fast-Tracked:
EXCO received progress reports on the Ibom International Hospital project and tasked the Ministries of Health and Justice to resolve outstanding legal and administrative bottlenecks to ensure the project’s timely takeoff.
Post-Meeting Inspection Tour:
Following the council session, Governor Umo Eno led an unscheduled inspection tour of key projects in the Uyo Central Business District, including the 5,000-capacity Convention Centre, Ibom Hotels, and the emerging ARISE Shopping City.
These resolutions underscore the administration’s commitment to infrastructure, economic revitalization, youth empowerment, and transparent investment management in line with the ARISE development blueprint.
