Amid rising political tension, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday announced an abrupt change in the venue for its scheduled Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting following a security lockdown at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
The meeting, initially billed to take place at the Wadata Plaza headquarters by 10 a.m., was relocated to the Yar’Adua Centre in the Central Business District of the Federal Capital Territory after armed security operatives reportedly sealed off the secretariat.
In a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the PDP alerted members of the BoT to proceed to the new venue without delay. “All BoT members are advised to proceed to the new venue,” the party stated, without giving further explanation for the sudden change.
Though details remain sketchy at press time, eyewitnesses and insiders within the party suspect the presence of armed security personnel may be linked to internal leadership tussles or external political interference, raising concerns about the independence of democratic institutions.
The PDP is yet to officially comment on the cause of the lockdown, but political watchers say the development could signal a fresh round of crisis within the opposition party, already grappling with internal discord and strategic recalibrations ahead of future national elections.
This latest incident adds another layer of complexity to Nigeria’s volatile political climate, prompting calls from civil society groups for transparency, dialogue, and respect for due process in managing intra-party affairs.
