Uyo, A serving commissioner in the Akwa Ibom State Executive Council has resigned his position, citing ideological opposition to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a firm commitment to principles over political convenience.
In a statement made public on Friday, the commissioner announced his decision to step down following Governor Umo Eno’s directive that all appointees unwilling to align with his planned defection to the APC should vacate their positions.
“Today, I have formally tendered my resignation from the Akwa Ibom State Executive Council,” the statement read. “While I respect the Governor’s personal political choices, I am unable to follow in that direction.”
The commissioner, who has held two key portfolios — Ministry of Information and Ministry of Special Duties & Ibom Deep Sea Port — emphasized his enduring belief in politics anchored on principle and his longstanding ideological objection to the APC. He described his position as consistent with the sentiments of “countless Nigerians across diverse sectors.”
Though stepping aside, the outgoing commissioner expressed profound gratitude to Governor Umo Eno, who he said trusted him with “sensitive portfolios” and treated him as a brother. He also acknowledged former Governor Udom Emmanuel for first bringing him into the state cabinet.
“This decision does not in any way diminish the deep respect and cordial relationship I share with Governor Umo Eno,” he noted, describing the Governor’s leadership as gracious and considerate.
Reflecting on his time in public office, he expressed contentment with his contributions and stated he would welcome another opportunity to serve. He also extended an olive branch to those who may disagree with his choice: “To those who may be disappointed, I ask for your understanding.”
He ended his statement on a note of faith: “I do not claim to know what the future holds, but I know the One who holds the future.”
This development marks a significant moment in Akwa Ibom politics, as Governor Eno’s anticipated shift to the APC continues to reshape political alignments in the state.
