Uyo, In a political development that may redefine the power dynamics in Akwa Ibom State and beyond, Governor Umo Eno has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing “enlightened state interest” and a need to align with the federal government for the sake of development and unity.
Speaking at a well-attended event in Uyo to announce his defection, Governor Eno described the move not as a betrayal of his political origins but as a strategic decision aimed at advancing the interests of Akwa Ibom State. “This movement is not driven by bitterness or discontent,” he declared. “It is driven purely by enlightened state interest.”
Governor Eno emphasized that while his political platform has changed, his commitment to integrity, inclusion, and people-first governance remains unshaken. “Governance is the destination,” he noted, “and my commitment is to govern beyond party lines – as I have done for two years.”
In a ringing endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the governor praised the president’s economic reforms, including the removal of petrol subsidy, stating that the policy shift has increased federal allocations to states like Akwa Ibom, enabling life-touching projects across the 31 local government areas.
“I watched him, Tinubu, transform Lagos from a fractured state to a subnational model. I believe he can do the same for Nigeria. I offer him my full support, unapologetically, and will work for his re-election,” Governor Eno said.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to the Arise Agenda, the developmental blueprint of his administration, assuring citizens that the focus remains on peace, unity, and inclusive growth irrespective of party lines.
The governor’s speech was delivered on the occasion of the Sallah celebration, which he described as symbolically significant, calling his defection “a gift to our dear President, a gesture of faith and purpose.”
Reactions from political watchers suggest that the governor’s defection could trigger a wave of realignments in the state’s political architecture, with implications for the 2027 general elections. He disclosed that he had received assurances of support and integration from President Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and the Progressive Governors’ Forum.
Closing on an optimistic note, Governor Eno called on Akwa Ibomites to “dream together, build together, and rise together,” echoing his well-worn refrain: “We are all Akwa Ibomites before politics.”
