The Sports Coaches Association of Nigeria (SCAN), the national umbrella body for Nigerian sports coaches, is set to convene a crucial congress on Sunday, May 18, 2025, in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The meeting will coincide with the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged “Abeokuta 2025.”
In an exclusive interview with KSM, the Secretary-General of SCAN, Obong Ntiense Williams, confirmed that the congress will take place at the Babcock University Games Village at 11:00 a.m., ahead of the festival’s opening ceremony later in the day at the newly refurbished Moshood Abiola Sports Complex.
“This congress is designed to provide a platform for all our members across the country—and even from the diaspora—to come together and deliberate on our collective future,” Coach Williams stated. “Top on the agenda is the welfare of coaches, which remains a pressing concern for our association.”
According to him, the congress will emphasize critical areas such as standard contractual agreements, professional development, and capacity building to enable coaches to deliver excellence at local and international levels.
Williams further explained that the physical nature of the congress will help build camaraderie and cohesion among coaches from diverse sporting backgrounds. “Our members will benefit from shared coaching experiences, gain confidence, and enhance their strategic approaches to competitions,” he noted.
The SCAN congress will draw participation from coaches across all sports recognized by the National Sports Commission and the Nigerian Olympic Committee. As a duly incorporated entity, the association continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of sports coaching in Nigeria.
“All coaches are encouraged to attend and take advantage of this opportunity to enhance their knowledge base and align with the evolving dynamics of modern sports management,” he concluded.
