In what many have described as both a massive empowerment initiative and a bold political declaration, Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Friday rolled out cash grants, vehicles, vocational tools, and scholarships worth over N2 billion to constituents across Akwa Ibom State.
The event, held as the second phase of his constituency empowerment programme, witnessed a mammoth turnout as thousands thronged the venue to benefit from a variety of items that included 30 minibuses, 67 passenger tricycles, cargo tricycles, 50 cassava processing machines, 347 deep freezers, 247 generators, hundreds of sewing machines, bags of rice, and educational scholarships.
The empowerment effort, which spanned the three senatorial districts of the state, was not only a display of largesse but also a calculated political move. Akpabio used the platform to make a resounding declaration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“We have decided, and our people have spoken with one voice. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Umo Eno, and I, Godswill Akpabio, will go unopposed in 2027,” he said, drawing thunderous support from the audience in what appeared to be a choreographed voice vote of affirmation.
He praised Governor Umo Eno for fostering peace and development in the state, describing him as “a man of peace and a man of God in attitude and actions.” He also commended the synergy between the state and federal governments, noting that President Tinubu appreciates the unity and progress seen in Akwa Ibom.
The empowerment scheme, while alleviating economic hardship for many, also doubled as a platform for consolidating political control. Analysts see the initiative as strategic, aimed at tightening grassroots support and reinforcing Akpabio’s dominance in Akwa Ibom’s political landscape.
In a continuation of his constituency outreach, the Senate President proceeded to commission several infrastructure projects in Ikono, Ini, and Obot Akara Local Government Areas. These included newly constructed police staff quarters, a modern market, and blocks of classrooms, all funded under his constituency intervention projects.
Observers say the blend of social investment and political messaging underscores Akpabio’s ambition to entrench his influence ahead of the next electoral cycle, using development as both tool and testimony.
