Akwa Ibom Resident Urges Focus On Governance, Hails Governor’s Collaboration With Opposition

By Solomon OKPO

An Akwa Ibom resident, identified as Titus, has urged Governor Pastor Umo Eno to prioritize governance over early political campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections. He expressed support for the Governor’s decision to work with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, rather than engaging in political rivalry.

Titus made the call during a live phone-in session on Monday, April 28, 2025, while participating in Mighty George’s 100-hour Guinness World Record attempt for the longest radio talk show on Comfort 95.1 FM, Uyo.

Reacting to Governor Eno’s recent pledge to support President Tinubu’s second-term bid despite belonging to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Titus emphasized the need for peace and developmental governance in Akwa Ibom State.

“Let us forget about elections and focus on governance,” Titus said. “I want our Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, to collaborate with the Senate President so that we have a peaceful period and can enjoy good governance and its benefits. Akwa Ibom people want governance, not elections.”

Also speaking during the programme, social commentator and human rights activist Emem Nkereuwem analyzed the Governor’s move, suggesting it reflects political foresight. She noted that the PDP might not favour a southern presidential candidate in 2027, a reality Governor Eno may have considered.

“The Governor knows the PDP more than we do,” Nkereuwem explained. “He may have seen that the party has not structured itself to allow a southern candidate to emerge for the presidency.”

She commended the Governor’s pragmatic stance, stressing that aligning with the federal government could bring progress to Akwa Ibom State. Nkereuwem also dismissed fears of Nigeria becoming a one-party state following recent defections.

“Nigerians are dynamic people,” she stated. “They know when to move and when not to move. Not everybody will defect, so I don’t see Nigeria becoming a one-party state.”

Meanwhile, George Iniabasi Essien, popularly known as Mighty George and celebrated as Nigeria’s Best Radio Presenter of 2023, continues his marathon broadcast in pursuit of setting a new Guinness World Record.
