UYO, The Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), in collaboration with the Women Arise for Good Governance (WALGON), marked the 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD) in a grand celebration at the NUJ Press Centre, Uyo.
The event, themed “Accelerating Action: Helping More Women Improve Their Potentials,” underscored the commitment of NAWOJ and WALGON to advancing women’s empowerment in alignment with Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda.
One of the highlights of the occasion was the presentation of grants to petty traders across the 31 local government areas, a gesture aimed at boosting grassroots economic activities and supporting female entrepreneurs.
Speaking at the event, Mrs. Grace Akpan, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Culture, commended NAWOJ and WALGON for their commendable initiative in fostering gender equality and economic empowerment. She lauded the association for keying into the state government’s developmental agenda.
A major highlight of the event was the keynote address delivered by Barr. Emem Ette, Secretary of the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Management Committee, who provided insightful discourse on advancing women’s rights and opportunities.
The occasion was further enlivened by captivating cultural performances from NAWOJ members, adding color and excitement to the celebration.
In her remarks, Comrade Nsikak Okon, Chairperson of AKS NAWOJ, expressed appreciation to all participants and partners for their unwavering support in making the event a success.
The 2025 IWD celebration in Akwa Ibom State was indeed an impactful occasion, reinforcing the call for accelerated action towards women’s empowerment and inclusion in governance and economic development.
