UYO, The Environmental Sanitation Court in Akwa Ibom State has commenced proceedings against residents who violated the March statewide environmental sanitation exercise.
Despite movement restrictions and extensive sensitization efforts, several individuals were apprehended for failing to comply with the directive. The defaulters, who were arrested across different locations, are now being arraigned before the court.
Presiding over the session is Senior Magistrate Amanda Effiom, as offenders face varying penalties, including fines and community service. While some pleaded guilty and received immediate sentencing, others are undergoing further legal proceedings.
The Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA), Obong (Dr.) Prince Ikim, alongside security agencies, is overseeing the enforcement process to ensure strict adherence to sanitation regulations.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to upholding environmental laws and warned residents to comply with future sanitation exercises to avoid prosecution.
