The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has reached a historic milestone as it celebrates its 70th anniversary. In a message to members, NUJ President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, commended journalists across the country for their resilience, dedication, and unwavering commitment to upholding press freedom and ethical journalism.
Reflecting on the union’s journey, Abdullahi highlighted the NUJ’s pivotal role in defending journalists’ rights, promoting media professionalism, and holding authorities accountable. He described journalists as the “voice of the voiceless” and emphasized the importance of maintaining the values of truth, fairness, and integrity in reporting.
“As we mark this milestone, let us renew our commitment to upholding the values of journalism. Together, we can continue to strive for a more just and democratic society, where the press remains free and independent,” he stated.
He congratulated all NUJ members on their contributions to the media industry and expressed optimism about the future of journalism in Nigeria.
The NUJ, founded in 1955, has been at the forefront of advocating press freedom and journalists’ welfare in Nigeria. The 70th-anniversary celebration serves as an opportunity to honor past achievements and chart a new course for the profession’s future.
