Rabat, In a breathtaking display of grit, passion, and unrelenting determination, Nigeria’s Super Falcons pulled off a historic 3-2 comeback victory over host nation Morocco to win the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), igniting jubilant celebrations across the country.
Trailing 2-0 at halftime, the Nigerian side delivered a masterclass in resilience at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. Goals from Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi, and a dramatic late strike by Jennifer Echegini sealed the comeback, crowning Nigeria continental champions for a record-extending 10th time.
The final, billed as a clash of titans, did not disappoint. Morocco stunned the Falcons early on, with captain Ghizlane Chebbak opening the scoring in the 12th minute. Sanaa Msouddy extended the lead in the 24th, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and putting Nigeria on the back foot.
The Super Falcons, galvanized by halftime adjustments and sheer willpower, clawed their way back into the contest. A handball in the Moroccan box gave Okoronkwo the opportunity to score from the spot in the 66th minute. Just five minutes later, Ijamilusi pounced on a loose ball in the box to fire home the equalizer.
As Morocco reeled under pressure, the Nigerians pressed on, and their efforts were rewarded in the 88th minute. Substitute Jennifer Echegini found space on the edge of the box and lashed home the winning goal, triggering euphoric scenes both on the pitch and across Nigeria.
In Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, and beyond, streets were flooded with ecstatic fans waving flags, blaring horns, and singing the praises of the indomitable Super Falcons. Social media exploded with tributes and congratulatory messages, as the nation basked in the glow of victory.
The win was the culmination of the team’s “Mission X” campaign a drive to secure their 10th WAFCON title. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, while goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie received the Best Goalkeeper award for her commanding performances throughout the competition.
Adding to the historic night, the Super Falcons became the first team to lift the newly designed WAFCON trophy, unveiled by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ahead of the tournament. The victory also came with a $1 million prize, solidifying Nigeria’s dominance in women’s football on the continent.
