Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to partnering with MTN Nigeria Communications Plc to boost the state’s tourism sector.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by MTN Nigeria’s management team, led by Chief Sales and Distribution Officer, Mr. Sida Adekuke, at Government House, Uyo, Governor Eno welcomed the telecommunication giant’s investment in sports tourism, particularly the upcoming MTN Championship Sports Tournament, scheduled for April 29 to May 3.

The governor emphasized his administration’s vision of transforming Akwa Ibom into a tourism hub within the Niger Delta, leveraging existing infrastructure and strategic investments.

“We are excited to host the MTN Champion Sports event in Akwa Ibom. As we position the state beyond oil, tourism presents a natural revenue source. Whether in sports, agriculture, culture, or medical tourism, we are working to make Akwa Ibom a preferred destination,” Governor Eno stated.

He further urged MTN to sustain its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives and use its platforms to promote the state’s tourism potential.

In response, Mr. Adekuke commended the governor for his leadership and the successful implementation of the Arise Agenda, which has enhanced Akwa Ibom’s reputation as a hospitable and secure environment for sports tourism. He also highlighted MTN’s investments in education, healthcare, and empowerment programs benefiting Akwa Ibom citizens.

Adekuke disclosed that six of the 20 top-selected players in the upcoming MTN Chance Sports Competition are from Akwa Ibom. He invited Governor Eno to flag off the event at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on April 30, 2025, while also seeking the government’s support for the tournament’s success.

Governor Eno reaffirmed his administration’s willingness to collaborate with MTN, stating, “We look forward to a stronger relationship and continued partnership to promote Akwa Ibom as a leading tourism and investment destination.”
