As part of efforts to boost tourism in Akwa Ibom State, the government has reaffirmed its commitment to the preservation of heritage sites, recognizing them as vital tourism assets.
The Honourable Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Anieti Udofia, made this known during his visit to the Mary Slessor Memorial Cairn in Use Ikot Oku, Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area, as part of his familiarization tour of key tourism sites across the state.
Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Grace Akpan, Dr. Udofia emphasized that the ARISE Agenda of Governor Umo Eno prioritizes tourism promotion as a driver of sustainable development. He noted that the government is poised to enhance and preserve critical tourism assets, including heritage sites like the Mary Slessor Memorial Cairn, to attract visitors and generate economic benefits.
“The Umo Eno administration is dedicated to safeguarding Akwa Ibom’s rich cultural heritage,” Dr. Udofia stated, adding that plans are underway to upgrade tourism infrastructure across the state. He stressed that these efforts would not only attract tourists but also create job opportunities, particularly for residents of host communities.
Acknowledging Akwa Ibom’s vast tourism potential, the Commissioner expressed confidence that Governor Umo Eno, a tourism advocate, would reposition the sector to enhance Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and drive sustainable development. He also underscored the importance of collaboration with host communities to prevent the defacement or destruction of heritage sites.
Welcoming the Commissioner, the Executive Chairman of Ibiono Ibom LGA, Hon. Asuakak Umoh, lauded the state government’s commitment to tourism, emphasizing the cultural significance of the area.
The delegation also toured other notable sites in Ibiono Ibom LGA, including the Okopedi Beach Market, the Traditional Rulers’ Council Complex at Ikpa Ibiono, and the Mary Slessor Vocational School.
Among those in the Commissioner’s entourage were the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Tourism (Hotels), the Publisher of Mail Newspaper, Mr. Ifreke Nsewo, as well as directors and tour guides from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
