In the midst of ongoing political debates and controversies surrounding former governors and allegations of corruption, a call for peace and unity has emerged in Akwa Ibom State. Concerns over the role of citizens in these disputes, particularly on social media, have taken center stage, with appeals for calm and reflection on the real benefits of such engagements.
Critics have questioned the motivation behind taking a former governor to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). “What do you gain from taking the former governor to EFCC?” one commentator asked, emphasizing that tarnishing the reputations of prominent individuals or engaging in political battles often does more harm than good.
The debate has also raised questions about accountability and the destination of recovered funds. “All the monies collected from ex-state governors or politicians by EFCC, have they been returned to their different states, or are they re-looted? So which one be your own?” the commentator challenged.
Some have suggested that if the recovered funds were distributed directly to citizens in the affected states, there would be a clearer incentive for public involvement in anti-corruption cases. “If to say that when the EFCC collects the looted monies, it would be shared into the accounts of indigenes of the state the monies were looted from, I follow shout,” Obong Edon said.
The discourse also highlighted the risks of citizens being used as “willing tools” in political battles. “You are not sure of your next meal, yet you allow yourself to fight people who can put you in jail for as long as they want,” a warning read, urging individuals to steer clear of divisive political matters.
The Evangelist News, a respected media outlet in the region, distanced itself from the controversy, stating, “Count The Evangelist News out of these much-talked-about looting cases because some people are benefiting from the matter.”
Amid the tension, a plea for unity and peace was made, emphasizing the need to prioritize harmony over division based on ethnic or political lines. “Let’s maintain peace in Akwa Ibom State and stop talking about Ibibio or Annang because we’re one in love,” the statement concluded.
As the discussions continue, citizens are reminded of the importance of fostering unity and avoiding actions that could destabilize the state’s peace.
