The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has announced plans to commence the enforcement of third-party vehicle insurance across the state starting February 1, 2025. This initiative aligns with Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle (Third Party Insurance) Act, which mandate all vehicle owners to possess valid third-party insurance before operating on public roads.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the Command emphasized that the directive stems from the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, and aims to protect road users, promote accountability, and ensure compliance with traffic regulations.
According to the release, vehicles without valid third-party insurance will be impounded and taken to the nearest police station. Owners will only retrieve their vehicles upon presenting valid insurance documents.
The Command also warned its personnel against any form of unprofessional conduct, particularly extortion, during the enforcement process. Officers found guilty of such acts will face severe disciplinary action.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has urged vehicle owners to comply with the law to avoid unnecessary inconveniences, reiterating its commitment to safety, law enforcement, and building public trust.
This measure marks a significant step toward enhancing road safety and ensuring legal adherence among motorists across the state.
