UYO, The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has announced measures aimed at strengthening the traditional institution and improving the welfare of traditional rulers across the state, while reaffirming their critical role in sustaining peace and unity at the grassroots.

Governor Eno made the announcement on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, during the presentation of certificates of recognition to newly recognised traditional rulers at the State Supreme Traditional Rulers Council Hall, Uyo, as part of activities marking Akwa Ibom’s 39th anniversary.

The governor said modalities had been put in place for an upward review of the monthly remuneration and welfare package of traditional rulers.

The development followed concerns over the place and welfare of traditional rulers in the state, with Governor Eno stressing that the traditional institution must retain its appropriate leadership structure within the communities. He specifically directed the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to review the remuneration of village and clan heads after concerns that youth presidents should not receive higher monthly stipends than village heads.

Newly recognised traditional rulers

The governor also urged traditional rulers and socio-cultural organisations to use their influence to promote peace, unity and stability, particularly as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections. According to him, political differences should not be allowed to undermine the peace and cohesion of Akwa Ibom State.

The latest development is being viewed by supporters of the administration as part of efforts to reposition the traditional institution as an effective partner in grassroots governance and security.

The broader argument advanced by proponents of the reforms is that adequately supported traditional rulers and community leadership structures can contribute more effectively to conflict prevention, community administration and the preservation of Akwa Ibom’s peace.
