The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by an additional two weeks to enable more eligible Nigerians to register ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
The extension, which takes effect on Wednesday, is aimed primarily at accommodating new voters, especially citizens who have recently attained the age of 18 and are now constitutionally qualified to participate in future elections.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) disclosed that the extension was approved to ensure that all eligible Nigerians who are yet to register have ample opportunity to complete the process before the commencement of other electoral activities leading to the 2027 polls.
The REC urged prospective registrants to take advantage of the online registration platform available through the INEC portal to begin their registration process before visiting designated registration centres for biometric capture and completion. According to the Commission, the online option is intended to reduce congestion at INEC offices and make the registration exercise faster and more convenient.
INEC appealed to all eligible citizens, particularly first-time voters, not to wait until the last minute but to utilize the extension period to register and obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), stressing that voter registration remains a critical step toward meaningful participation in Nigeria’s democratic process.
