The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has received the newly gazetted Nigeria Police Force Regulations, pledging swift and comprehensive implementation across the Force.
The Regulations were formally presented on April 15, 2026, by the Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam, during a handover ceremony at the Federal Ministry of Police Affairs in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, the Head of the Police Reform Secretariat, Olu Ogunsakin, described the gazettement as a critical step in bridging the gap between the Police Act 2020 and real-world policing operations. He noted that the development effectively moves ongoing reforms from policy formulation to practical implementation.
In his keynote address, Gaidam reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to deepening police reforms and ensuring the effective rollout of the Regulations in alignment with national security priorities.
Responding, IGP Disu characterised the development as a major milestone, emphasizing that the Regulations, enacted pursuant to Section 138 of the Police Act, 2020, provide a structured framework for professional, accountable, and rights-based policing. He commended the Minister’s leadership and acknowledged the contributions of the United Nations Development Programme and the Police Reform Secretariat.
The police chief assured that implementation would be immediate and far-reaching, including force wide dissemination, integration into training and operational systems, and strict enforcement across all commands and formations. He stressed that accountability would remain at the core of the reform process.
The ceremony drew participation from key stakeholders, including representatives of the Police Service Commission, National Human Rights Commission, Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Federal Ministry of Justice, the United Nations Development Programme, civil society groups, and other partners.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to fully implementing the new Regulations as part of broader efforts to enhance professionalism, strengthen accountability, and rebuild public trust in policing nationwide.
