ABUJA, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has called for increased local production of arms and ammunition as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s fight against insecurity.
Kalu made the call while addressing concerns over the persistent security challenges facing the country, stressing that Nigeria must reduce its dependence on foreign sources for critical defence equipment.
According to him, developing a robust local arms manufacturing industry would enhance the nation’s capacity to respond swiftly to security threats while boosting self-reliance in defence operations.
The Deputy Speaker also advocated stronger financial surveillance measures aimed at disrupting illicit financial flows that often fuel criminal activities, terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of insecurity across the country.
He noted that tackling insecurity requires a comprehensive approach that combines military preparedness with effective economic and financial controls. Kalu emphasized the need for government agencies to work collaboratively in identifying and blocking funding channels used by criminal networks.
The lawmaker further urged stakeholders in the security sector to support policies that encourage indigenous defence production, technological innovation, and intelligence sharing.
He maintained that strengthening local defence capabilities and cutting off financial support to criminal elements would significantly improve Nigeria’s security architecture and contribute to national stability.
Kalu’s position comes amid growing concerns over escalating security challenges in various parts of the country, with renewed calls for sustainable and home-grown solutions to safeguard lives and property.
