The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce flexible monthly and quarterly rent payment options as part of efforts to reduce the financial strain associated with annual house rents, particularly for low-income residents.
The Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, disclosed that the initiative forms part of the state government’s broader housing reform agenda aimed at improving affordability and accessibility across the state.
According to the commissioner, the proposed system is expected to provide relief for tenants who often struggle to raise large lump-sum payments demanded by landlords under the traditional yearly rent structure.
He explained that the government is already engaging landlords, property developers and other critical stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the policy without creating unintended challenges within the housing sector.
Akinderu-Fatai further revealed that a pilot phase of the initiative would soon commence in selected areas of Lagos before possible expansion to other parts of the state.
The development has been welcomed by many residents and housing advocates who believe the move could significantly ease the economic pressure on tenants amid rising living costs and growing urban housing demands.
