The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Akwa Ibom State, Professor Anugbum Onuoha, has reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting credible, transparent, peaceful, and lawful elections in the state, while warning political parties against engaging in premature political campaigns.
Prof. Onuoha gave the assurance during an engagement with members of the media and other stakeholders at the INEC office in Uyo, where he emphasized the commission’s resolve to maintain neutrality and strict adherence to the Electoral Act 2026 in all electoral processes.
He described the media as a critical partner in strengthening democracy through voter education, public enlightenment, and the dissemination of credible information to citizens.
According to the REC, professional and responsible journalism remains vital in promoting transparency, deepening public trust, and enhancing the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system.
He commended journalists for their contributions in keeping the electorate informed about electoral guidelines, procedures, and developments, adding that sustained collaboration between INEC and the media would further improve democratic participation and electoral integrity.
Prof. Onuoha assured political actors, journalists, and stakeholders of the commission’s readiness to maintain open communication and provide timely clarification on electoral matters within the confines of the law.
He, however, cautioned political parties and their supporters against embarking on campaigns ahead of the official commencement date approved by INEC, stressing that the ban on political campaigns is yet to be lifted.
The REC warned that any form of premature campaign activities would constitute a violation of the Electoral Act and would not be tolerated by the commission.
He urged political stakeholders to conduct themselves responsibly and operate strictly within the legal framework to ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral environment.
Prof. Onuoha also charged media practitioners to uphold the ethics of journalism by ensuring accuracy, fairness, objectivity, and balanced reportage, especially as political activities gradually intensify across the country.
The electoral commissioner expressed appreciation to the media for its continued support and coverage of INEC programmes and activities, expressing optimism that stronger cooperation among the commission, political parties, civil society groups, and the media would further consolidate democratic governance in Akwa Ibom State.
Meanwhile, Prof. Onuoha’s distinguished career in academia, public service, electoral administration, and traditional leadership continues to attract widespread recognition across the country.
Born in the Rumuegumah Community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, the renowned legal scholar rose from humble beginnings to become a Professor of Property and Secured Credit Law at Rivers State University.
He holds degrees in Estate Management and Law, including a Ph.D in Law, and has authored more than 74 scholarly publications alongside several conference papers and books focused on Property and Secured Credit Law.
Before his appointment as INEC REC in 2023, Prof. Onuoha served in several strategic positions, including Commissioner for Legal and Political Party Affairs at the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission and Special Adviser to the Governor of Rivers State on Land and Survey.
Beyond public service, he is widely respected for his contributions to academic development, mentorship, and philanthropy through scholarship schemes and excellence awards designed to encourage outstanding academic performance among students.
He is also a traditional ruler, serving as the Eze of Rumuegumah Community and Eze Rumuenyinwere/Orlu Ekpodota Clan in Rivers State.
Prof. Onuoha is married to His Worship, Dame Oby Anugbum, and their union is blessed with four children.
