The Federal Government has outlawed the collection of road taxes through roadside checkpoints and the issuance of tax stickers, marking a decisive shift in Nigeria’s tax administration framework.
The directive, announced by the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), forms part of sweeping tax reforms introduced nationwide in 2026 to modernize revenue collection, eliminate harassment of motorists and curb corruption linked to informal levies.
In a statement, the Board declared all forms of roadside tax collections illegal, including road tax stickers previously issued at state-controlled checkpoints. Security agencies have been mandated to dismantle unauthorized checkpoints and enforce strict compliance with the new regime.
Describing the development as a milestone in fiscal reform, the JRB said the policy would protect motorists from arbitrary charges while promoting a more transparent and centralized tax system.
For decades, drivers across the country have faced multiple levies imposed under varying names at different checkpoints. The system, often inconsistent and poorly regulated, created loopholes for exploitation and unofficial collections.
With the new law in force, motorists are no longer required to stop on highways for road tax payments. Stickers formerly issued as proof of payment are no longer valid.
The government maintains that the reform will streamline tax administration, enhance accountability, and improve voluntary compliance by clearly defining legitimate tax obligations.
Enforcement agencies are currently monitoring highways to ensure the full implementation of the directive and prevent any continuation of illegal collections.
Officials say the reform represents a broader effort to sanitize revenue processes, strengthen institutional oversight and restore public confidence in the country’s tax system.
