President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, bringing an early end to his four-year tenure as head of the Nigeria Police Force.
The resignation, according to a State House press release issued on Tuesday, was conveyed through a letter submitted by Egbetokun, who cited pressing family considerations for his decision.
In response, the President approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.
President Tinubu expressed profound appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of service to the nation and the police institution, commending his professionalism and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s internal security framework. Appointed in June 2023, Egbetokun was expected to serve until June 2027 under the amended provisions of the Police Act.
The President described the transition as necessary in view of prevailing security challenges across the country, stating that Disu’s operational experience and leadership credentials position him to provide steady direction at a critical time.
In line with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, the President will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police. Following the council’s deliberation, his nomination will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
The Presidency reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening institutional capacity within the Nigeria Police Force and ensuring that the force remains professional, accountable, and fully equipped to discharge its constitutional mandate.
